Why Girls Deserve Better Sportswear

Why Girls Deserve Better Sportswear

Girls are athletes.

That means their performance apparel should be designed with the same level of thought given to any serious athletic product.

Fit should work when they run, jump and change direction. Pockets should be useful. Fabric should move. Coverage should feel right for the athlete wearing it.

Most importantly, girls should have real choices rather than being asked to adapt to whatever happens to be available.

Girls’ athletic wear should begin with the athlete

Good performance apparel starts by asking how the athlete will actually use it.

A young female athlete may wear the same pair of shorts to school, recess, practice, warmups and a weekend tournament.

During those hours she may sprint, squat, sit, jump, stretch and change direction hundreds of times.

That reality should shape the product from the beginning.

Fit should not be an afterthought

Fit affects nearly every part of how athletic shorts perform.

Waistband comfort matters. Leg opening matters. Coverage matters. The way the shorts move during running and lateral movement matters.

Girls should also have more than one performance silhouette available to them.

Some athletes prefer a shorter style. Others prefer additional coverage. Neither choice is automatically better.

The important thing is that the garment allows the athlete to move freely and feel comfortable wearing it.

We explore that in more detail in our guide to how long girls’ athletic shorts should be .

Functional pockets should actually function

Storage is another place where girls’ athletic apparel deserves more attention.

A pocket should be deep enough to be useful, positioned so it does not interfere with movement and secure enough to work once the athlete starts running.

A zipper pocket can provide another option for a small item that needs to stay in place during school, practice or travel.

We believe this matters enough that we created a separate guide to what makes pockets actually useful in girls’ athletic shorts .

Coverage and performance can work together

Athletes should not have to choose between coverage and freedom of movement.

A thoughtfully designed inner short can add coverage and comfort while an outer short provides the athletic silhouette and range of motion the athlete wants.

Stretch, fabric weight, leg opening and construction all have to work together so the shorts remain comfortable through running, jumping and changing direction.

The goal is not simply to add more fabric.

It is to design the whole garment around movement.

Performance features should solve real problems

Girls do not need a different standard for performance.

Four-way stretch should support movement.

Breathable, moisture-managing fabric should help through practices and long days.

UPF 50+ can add protection during outdoor activity.

Odor resistance can help when sports gear moves from practice into a backpack or car.

Functional pockets should remain useful during movement.

Those are not girls’ features or boys’ features.

They are performance features.

You can learn more about what features matter most in youth athletic shorts .

Girls deserve products developed around them

That principle influenced how we approached the girls’ CoreFlex short.

We did not want to begin with a boys’ product and simply change the color.

The girls’ silhouette went through its own development process, including decisions around fit, proportions, coverage, functional pockets and the built-in inner short.

Feedback from young athletes and parents helped shape those decisions.

You can read more about that process in how athlete feedback shaped CoreFlex .

Performance starts with feeling comfortable enough to compete

Athletic apparel should support the athlete rather than become another distraction.

If a waistband constantly needs adjustment, pockets do not work or the shorts feel restrictive during movement, the athlete notices.

When everything works together, the garment becomes easier to forget.

The athlete can focus on the drill, the game, the next rep or whatever comes next.

Better sportswear means better choices

Eyrx is not trying to define one correct way for girls to dress for sports.

We want to help create more thoughtful options.

More attention to fit.

More functional design.

More performance features that earn their place.

More silhouettes that acknowledge different preferences.

Girls deserve that level of choice because they are not a secondary audience in sports.

They are athletes.

Their gear should be built like it.
