How to Wash Youth Performance Gear Without Ruining It

Practice ends. The gear goes in the backpack. The backpack goes in the car. And sometimes everything stays there longer than anyone planned.

That’s life with youth athletes.

Performance apparel is built to handle repeat wear, but the way it is washed can make a difference in how it feels, fits and performs over time.

Here are a few simple ways to take better care of it.

Start with the care label

Performance apparel can use different fabrics, trims and finishes, so the care label should always be the first stop.

If the label gives specific washing or drying instructions, follow those first.

Cold water is usually a smart choice

Youth sports gear can move through the laundry several times in the same week.

For many performance fabrics, washing in cold water is a simple way to clean everyday practice gear without adding unnecessary stress to the material.

Keep the detergent simple

More detergent does not always mean cleaner gear.

A normal amount of mild detergent is usually enough for everyday washing, and using too much can make it harder to rinse cleanly from performance fabrics.

Turn performance apparel inside out

Shorts, jerseys and training tops take most of their wear on the inside.

Turning them inside out before washing can help clean the areas closest to the athlete while also helping protect exterior details.

It takes a few seconds and is an easy habit to build.

Be careful with high heat

Performance apparel often relies on stretch fabrics, trims and technical details that can take a beating from repeated high heat.

When the care label allows it, air drying or using a lower-heat setting can be a good option for gear that is constantly moving from practice to laundry and back again.

Get it out of the sports bag

This might be the most important rule of youth sports laundry.

Shorts, jerseys, socks and training gear have a way of disappearing into backpacks after practice and showing up again days later.

If possible, get worn gear out of the bag and into the laundry or somewhere it can air out.

That small step can make the whole routine easier.

Performance gear should be ready for repeat use

Youth athletes rarely wear their favorite gear once.

A pair of shorts might go from football practice to the wash, then show up again for basketball, baseball, field hockey, soccer or training later in the week.

A performance top might do the same thing.

That repeat use is why fit, stretch, breathability and durable construction matter in the first place.

Built for the week youth athletes actually have

At Eyrx, we think about performance apparel around the reality of youth sports.

Practice. Training. School. Another practice. A weekend tournament. Then back through the wash and ready to go again.

Because performance gear should be built for the youth athlete’s whole week, not just one moment of it.

Gear built to survive that week is the whole point. See the CoreFlex kids athletic shorts.

Eyrx. Built from the ground up. For youth athletes.
